Why Can’t I Hear My Television?

July 17, 2018 by Kathy

This is another common complaint that I hear. Even with the best hearing devices, television listening can still be a problem. One reason is technology. The quality of television pictures has been improving consistently. Unfortunately, the same care and product development has not gone into the sound systems in televisions. So, you may have a 60-inch television screen with fabulous resolution and 30-year-old speaker technology. My patients with surround sound systems also report … [Read more...]

Why two hearing aids?

June 12, 2018 by Kathy

I know I have written about this before; however, it is so important that I think it is important to bring up again. Why two hearing aids? Have you ever heard if you don’t use it, you lose it? Well, this saying goes for hearing, as well. I recently saw a gentleman who has worn a hearing aid in one ear for many years, even though his hearing is about the same in both ears. When we created his hearing profile, the results showed a huge difference in his ability to understand words … [Read more...]

Use it or Lose it applies to Hearing

May 15, 2018 by Kathy

Don’t Put Off Taking Care of Your Hearing Loss. That old adage-use it or lose it applies to hearing. Once the brain has been deprived of hearing the sounds of life for years, it never fully recovers, even with the best hearing devices. I frequently see elderly people who should have addressed their hearing loss years ago. By the time I see them, they haven’t been hearing well for years and their families are at their wits-end. While I can help them, their outcomes are never as good … [Read more...]

Toddler getting first pair of Hearing Aids

May 2, 2018 by Kathy

Recently I came across a Facebook posting of a toddler getting her first pair of hearing aids. At first, she fussed because she didn’t want anything in her ears. After her mother started talking she was all smiles. Even a toddler recognizes how important it is to hear speech. I am always amazed that some older adults choose not to hear. They don’t feel that it is important to hear what is going on in the world around them. While hearing aids aren’t perfect, they are getting … [Read more...]

Bring a Loved One to Appointment

April 5, 2018 by Kathy

Why Should I Bring a Loved One To My Appointment? There are a number of reasons why it is helpful to have someone along for your first visit. 1. It gives you an “extra pair of ears” to help you remember what you learn. Sometimes there is a lot of information to remember. 2. It helps you to make better decisions about what you want to do. 3. It helps your partner know how to better communicate with you if you have a hearing loss. Family and friends are always welcome. If … [Read more...]

February is American Heart Month - The Way You Treat Your Heart Affects Your Hearing Did you know that your heart health can affect your hearing? What’s the connection? When your heart functions normally, blood flow to your other organs, including the ear, is normal. If you have heart disease, it can impair normal blood flow to your inner ear. The inner ear is supplied with blood via tiny capillaries. Don’t despair. The things you do to help out your heart, help your ears too. … [Read more...]

Hearing Aid Satisfaction

November 12, 2017 by Kathy

Hearing aid satisfaction has gone from about 33% in 1984 to 80% in 2014. I know that most people would find this hard to believe because we all know someone who refuses to wear their hearing aids. Most of my patients would tell you that their hearing devices have improved their quality of life greatly. Today's hearing devices can be programmed so exactly for each patient, that we have much greater satisfaction than we did, even 5 years ago. I am truly amazed at what we are able to do … [Read more...]
