A Word of Caution

July 24, 2018 by Kathy

Recently there was a terrible accident in Tampa. A woman was backed over by a garbage truck. You might think “How could that happen?” There is a loud beeping sound when commercial trucks back up. It turned out that she was wearing hearing aids. Your next thought might be “Why didn’t she hear the beeps?” Even with the best hearing aids, no one hears everything. If her hearing was bad enough, she probably still didn’t hear the beeping. Another thing to consider, is how noisy was the … [Read more...]

Why Can’t I Hear My Television?

July 17, 2018 by Kathy

This is another common complaint that I hear. Even with the best hearing devices, television listening can still be a problem. One reason is technology. The quality of television pictures has been improving consistently. Unfortunately, the same care and product development has not gone into the sound systems in televisions. So, you may have a 60-inch television screen with fabulous resolution and 30-year-old speaker technology. My patients with surround sound systems also report … [Read more...]

Hurricane Season is Here

July 17, 2018 by Kathy

I am hoping that we won’t have a repeat of last year’s hurricane season. However, I do think that we all learned a few things last year and can be better prepared. When you prepare your hurricane kit for the year, don’t forget about your hearing aids. Be sure to add extra batteries, domes and filters to your kit. If you have rechargeable hearing aids, be sure to have either regular batteries or extra power sources for your recharger. Many of us didn’t have power for several days after … [Read more...]

Where should I keep my hearing aids?

July 2, 2018 by Kathy

Of course, you want to store your aids in a safe place. But where is that? 1. Do not keep your hearing aids in the bathroom. It is too damp and in a cluttered area, it is easily knocked onto the floor, or worse. 2. Do not ever wrap anything of value in Kleenex. It will get thrown away. 3. Do not leave the aids where pets and children have access to them. (Yes, even your wonderful, well-behaved pet will eat them). 4. Don’t randomly set them down. They will get lost. 5. Have a … [Read more...]

Test Hearing Aid Batteries

June 22, 2018 by Kathy

How Can You Tell If Your Hearing Aid Battery Is Good? Have you ever gone to change your hearing aid battery and couldn’t remember which one was good and which one was dead? There is a simple solution. If you drop a good battery onto a desk from about 6 inches, it doesn’t bounce. If you drop a dead battery, it bounces. This is an easy way to check your battery so you don’t end up throwing away good batteries. If you would like more information, give us a call at … [Read more...]

Protect your Ears from the Sun

June 12, 2018 by Kathy

Ears are a prime target for sun exposure and a common spot for skin cancers. Up to 1/3 of all skin cancer occurs on the ears. It is also difficult to see your entire ear when looking in the mirror. If you feel a rough scaly patch, you should have it checked out. Also, note any changes in skin color. Most of us don’t think about our ears when we apply sunscreen even though it is important to use sunscreen on your ears. Don’t forget the back of your ears. If you wear hearing aids, remove … [Read more...]

Why two hearing aids?

June 12, 2018 by Kathy

I know I have written about this before; however, it is so important that I think it is important to bring up again. Why two hearing aids? Have you ever heard if you don’t use it, you lose it? Well, this saying goes for hearing, as well. I recently saw a gentleman who has worn a hearing aid in one ear for many years, even though his hearing is about the same in both ears. When we created his hearing profile, the results showed a huge difference in his ability to understand words … [Read more...]

Use it or Lose it applies to Hearing

May 15, 2018 by Kathy

Don’t Put Off Taking Care of Your Hearing Loss. That old adage-use it or lose it applies to hearing. Once the brain has been deprived of hearing the sounds of life for years, it never fully recovers, even with the best hearing devices. I frequently see elderly people who should have addressed their hearing loss years ago. By the time I see them, they haven’t been hearing well for years and their families are at their wits-end. While I can help them, their outcomes are never as good … [Read more...]

Toddler getting first pair of Hearing Aids

May 2, 2018 by Kathy

Recently I came across a Facebook posting of a toddler getting her first pair of hearing aids. At first, she fussed because she didn’t want anything in her ears. After her mother started talking she was all smiles. Even a toddler recognizes how important it is to hear speech. I am always amazed that some older adults choose not to hear. They don’t feel that it is important to hear what is going on in the world around them. While hearing aids aren’t perfect, they are getting … [Read more...]
