Selective Hearing

October 16, 2021 by Kathy

We have all done it... jokingly, made a remark that your significant other has “selective hearing.” Have you ever really thought about what hearing loss can do to your brain? Auditory deprivation occurs when the brain, specifically the auditory cortex, is not activated due to hearing loss. That’s right, hearing loss actually prevents your brain from receiving important speech information. We are here to help if you or a family member is having any difficulties with hearing, … [Read more...]

Key to Happiness

October 16, 2021 by Kathy

Over the course of more than 75 years of studying happiness in adults, a Harvard study has revealed the “key” to happiness. The study determined that the strength and depth of the relationships in our lives determines our health and happiness levels. Why am I bringing this up as an audiologist? A key component to relationships is a sense of closeness and honesty between the relationship partners. This requires communication- NOT just presence. Hearing loss can remove us from those we … [Read more...]

Helpful Mask Reminders

September 29, 2021 by Kathy

I was hoping that we would be done with face masks by now, but that isn’t going to happen. Masks have made wearing hearing aids a lot more challenging. There are a few things that you can do to make it easier: 1.  Use a mask holder that keeps the mask off of your ears.2.  Make sure that your mask fits properly. If the elastic is too tight, it pulls your ears forward. This causes a poor fit with your hearing aids, making it more likely that you will lose them. 3.  Always remove your … [Read more...]

Untreated Hearing Loss

September 15, 2021 by Kathy

There are several reasons why someone with untreated hearing loss doesn’t pursue amplification. One of the reasons is because of the stigmas associated with hearing loss. “I can’t come to terms with the fact that I need hearing aids already.” My confession to you is hearing loss doesn’t discriminate based on your age as much as you’d think. At Broadwater Hearing Care, my goal is to help reduce stigmas associated with hearing loss. Don’t wait... get a baseline hearing test! You only … [Read more...]

Finding Lost Hearing Aids

September 14, 2021 by Kathy

One of my patients shared a helpful event with me. He had knocked his hearing aids out of his ears into the grass. It was late. Visibility was poor. Luckily his hearing aids were connected to his mobile phone via Bluetooth. He had the hearing aid app with find my hearing aids; however, that only works for a general area. His son suggested that he turn the music that he streams up as loud as possible so that they could “hear” the hearing aids. It worked! They were able to find the … [Read more...]

September 14, 2021 by Kathy

Hallie Levine writes in Consumer Reports, '4 Steps to Boost Brainpower' T he isolation and inactivity of the pandemic took a mental toll on some people, both those with dementia and those with a healthy brain. “We saw a clear decline in people who already had dementia, but the effects were also felt in otherwise healthy older adults without any preexisting cognitive issues,” says dementia specialist Joel Salinas, MD, of the NYU Grossman School of Medicine in New York … [Read more...]

How does sound damage hearing?

August 17, 2021 by Kathy

So how does sound actually damage your hearing? The fact of the matter is noise induced hearing loss can impact the entire auditory system. Noise induced hearing loss: hearing loss caused by exposure to excessively loud sounds. For common noise exposures that are not “blast/explosive” in nature, the hearing loss is primarily caused by damage in the inner ear cells/nerve fibers. Once these cells are broken, fractured, or damaged, they are unable to efficiently send auditory signals to the … [Read more...]
