Today, one of my patients asked me “Why do we charge for a hearing test?” I know it is confusing when you see all these free tests advertised all over the place. Most people who advertise “free hearing exam” are not audiologists. According to Medicare, Medicaid and all other insurance, a hearing instrument specialist is not capable of doing a diagnostic hearing test. They can only do a test to fit a hearing aid. So, chances are, if you see a hearing instrument specialist, you will be pushed … [Read more...]

Planning to Travel in 2015?
Remember that when you travel, your routine is disrupted. You have to be extra careful about where you put your hearing aids so they don’t get lost. If you have to take your hearing aids out on an airplane, put them in their box and inside a zipped compartment of you carry on bag. (There really is no reason to take them out on a plane unless you plan to sleep). If you are staying in a hotel room, put your hearing aids with your valuables, so they don’t get left behind. If you are … [Read more...]
If It Looks Too Good To Be True
Every once in awhile one of my patients will bring in an ad for hearing aids that they have seen in the paper or received in the mail. They almost always talk about how cheap they are. Or if you buy two you get the second one for free, or get $1,500.00 off your purchase. I recently saw an ad that said that if you purchased hearing aids, you would get a free 40" television. Amazing. Don't you wonder how much they are marking up their hearing aids in order to make these fabulous offers? I … [Read more...]

Why Get Your Hearing Care Where You Buy Toilet Paper?
I have a new patient. He came to me after purchasing hearing aids from a “Big Box Store”. He got the store brand hearing aids and has not done very well with them. I have a hard time understanding why anyone would want to get their health care where they buy toilet paper. I think it is because they think that they are getting a bargain. When it comes to hearing aids and hearing healthcare, this is not true. Store brand hearing aids are often manufactured by second-rate hearing aid … [Read more...]

Hearing Loss impacts Happiness
Just yesterday I saw a new patient for a hearing check. She was with her daughter who was very concerned that her mother was withdrawing and not participating with her family and friends the way she used to. Both mother and daughter told me that they had heard that hearing aids didn’t help and no one liked them. Unfortunately, it is always the people who are unhappy with their hearing aids that talk about them. The majority of people, who are happy, never say anything. After explaining … [Read more...]
