Just yesterday I saw a new patient for a hearing check. She was with her daughter who was very concerned that her mother was withdrawing and not participating with her family and friends the way she used to. Both mother and daughter told me that they had heard that hearing aids didn’t help and no one liked them.
Unfortunately, it is always the people who are unhappy with their hearing aids that talk about them.
The majority of people, who are happy, never say anything. After explaining that the mother did have a significant hearing loss, I offered to let her wear a pair of hearing aids for a week.
I put the hearing aids on her and programmed them. Her expression changed immediately. She was happy and following conversation that she couldn’t follow a few minutes before. Her daughter remarked at the change in her.
Hearing aids do require a period of adjustment, but most people do very well and have a significant improvement in the quality of their lives.
