This is another common complaint that I hear. Even with the best hearing devices, television listening can still be a problem. One reason is technology.
The quality of television pictures has been improving consistently. Unfortunately, the same care and product development has not gone into the sound systems in televisions. So, you may have a 60-inch television screen with fabulous resolution and 30-year-old speaker technology.
My patients with surround sound systems also report difficulty hearing. This is because these systems were designed to make your family room sound like a movie theater, boomy bass overpowering the treble sounds. If you have a surround sound system, turn off the rear speakers and readjust the low frequency (pitch) sounds. Who wants “realistic” sound if you can’t understand it?
There is a simple solution for television. That is, to add a soundbar. They are relatively inexpensive and easy to install. If you do not feel comfortable installing it yourself, many stores will have someone come out and install it for a small fee.
Many hearing devices can also be made to work with wireless Bluetooth devices that stream directly to your hearing devices. We would be happy to help you with this.
