The Joy of Hearing Simple Things

June 17, 2019 by Kathy

When a patient is first fit with hearing devices, they frequently return with funny stories about the things that they hear.

Hearing well improves quality of lifeFor most people, hearing changes so gradually, that is easy to forget environmental sounds that the rest of us take for granted. It is not unusual for the new hearing device wearer to rediscover that the world is a noisy place.

While this may seem annoying at first, the brain needs to hear these sounds to function normally. For instance, safety is improved when you can hear sounds from behind. It also improves balance. It is easier for your brain to sense where your body is when it can hear the sounds around it.

I also hear funny stories from my patients about sounds that they had forgotten and have rediscovered. The sounds of a purring cat, airplanes flying overhead, lettuce tearing, and sheets rustling, these are some of the recently discovered sounds that I have heard about. Relearning to hear brings about a lot of happiness.
