Silence can reduce stress and relax the body. Our society today seems to be telling us that loud is better. There is noise everywhere.
A few years ago, while at a conference, I had the opportunity to hear a speaker talk about silence and how difficult it is to find a place with no created human sounds.
Since then, I actively look for silent places. I have found a few, while on vacations. The most remote was in Tombstone Territorial Park in the Yukon Territory. There were no sounds, except the wind. To listen to nature, undisturbed was amazing.
This summer, while traveling in New England, I had another experience at a Revolutionary War Monument. No cars, no airplanes, no people talking, just the birds and the wind. Nature at its best.
This is good silence, bad silence is caused by hearing loss. Not only does hearing loss affect human communication, it doesn’t allow the individual to appreciate other sounds that most of us take for granted. Hearing allows the brain to function normally.
