PSAPs (Personal Sound Amplifiers) are not hearing aids and aren’t meant to be used in place of hearing aids.
While they are much less expensive, they are not regulated by the FDA like hearing aids are. Because they are not regulated, the advertisements can say just about anything.
If you think you have a hearing loss, the first step is a professional hearing evaluation. Sometimes there are simple solutions that don’t require hearing aids or PSAPs.
Hearing aids are available in many types, styles and price ranges and can be programmed for you. PSAPs just amplify everything. They can even damage your hearing if they are too loud.
