As part of Better Hearing Month, Broadwater Hearing Care is encouraging consumers to be more aware of their hearing health.
I like to think of it as hearing loss prevention month. By adopting good hearing health care habits, you can protect your hearing and push back the need for hearing aids for many years.
“Hearing loss can be caused by exposure to loud noises, ear infections, trauma, or ear disease: harm to the inner ear and ear drum; illness or certain medications; and deterioration due to the normal aging process,” explains Susan E. Terry, AuD, Doctor of Audiology.

Hearing loss currently affects more than 36 million Americans. Although hearing problems are commonly associated with the normal aging process, more than half of all hearing impaired persons are younger than 65. With the increased use of personal music players (MP3 players) and earbuds, the number of Americans experiencing hearing loss at a younger age is growing.
On average, most Americans consider hearing loss a condition that is simply associated with aging and don’t know how to recognize the condition or who is qualified to diagnose and treat the condition. In an effort to raise public awareness for the growing number of Americans suffering from hearing loss, the American Academy of Audiology in conjunction with Broadwater Hearing Care is celebrating Better Hearing Month this May.
An audiologist is a highly educated and clinically experienced health care professional specializing in evaluating, diagnosing, and treating people with hearing loss and balance disorders. Hearing loss can affect people of all ages – from birth on.
If you have trouble hearing conversation, ringing in the ear, or would like to learn how to prevent hearing loss, it is important to see an audiologist.
“Broadwater Hearing Care has been providing hearing healthcare to St. Petersburg since 1988. Our goal has always been to help our patients hear the very best that they can,” stated Susan E. Terry, AuD, F-NAP, F-AAA.
Broadwater Hearing Care’s audiologist has specialties including:
*Diagnostic hearing evaluations
*Prescribing and fitting hearing aids
*Tinnitus diagnostic evaluation and treatment
*Hearing rehabilitation training
*Hearing protection devices
Although most hearing loss is permanent, an audiologist can determine the best treatment.
It is a good idea to have a baseline hearing check-up. I like to discuss ways to protect hearing and prevent hearing loss during your appointment. Nothing makes me happier than telling my patients that they have normal hearing and I want to help you keep it that way.
Hearing healthcare is part of your overall healthcare and hearing loss can lead to many other problems. Prevention is the key.
