Better Speech and Hearing Month is observed in May each year to increase awareness about communication disorders and hearing health. Founded by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA), this day also provides an opportunity to honor the roles of ASHA members in providing treatment to those affected by speech and hearing disorders. For 2022, the ASHA theme is “Connecting People.”
This year, the month of May is extra special because the 24th Summer Deaflympics will be held from May 1st to May 15th in Brazil! The Deaflympics are recognized by the International Olympic Committee and will have 21 summer sports that are adapted to fit the needs of elite athletes with hearing loss. Some adaptations are light flashing systems instead of starting buzzers and referees/officials using hand signals and flags instead of whistles!
To participate in the Deaflympics, all athletes have to have at least a moderate hearing loss in their better ear and have an up to date hearing test completed by a licensed audiologist within 4 months of the event. Amplification devices like hearing aids and cochlear implants are not allowed during warm up and competition.
