There are many reasons why some people might not be 100% satisfied with their hearing aids. Some of the first things I assess when seeing patients who are not seeing benefit from their hearing aids include
→ Severity of their hearing loss: everyone’s hearing loss is different! Background noise is the most challenging environment for many hearing aid users. Hearing aids are designed to minimize background noise, NOT eliminate it. The more severe the hearing loss, the harder background noise tends to be.
→ Fit of the hearing aids: a proper physical fit makes a HUGE difference in ensuring the sound the patient needs is achieved.
→ Hearing aid technology: certain hearing aid technologies are better able to handle background noise than others. An audiologist will be able to explain the pros and cons of various levels of technology.
→ Programming settings: sometimes, hearing aids require fine-tuning based on the patient’s feedback. Adjustments can be made after a patient provides input on how the devices function in their REAL world listening environments.
