Today, one of my patients asked me “Why do we charge for a hearing test?” I know it is confusing when you see all these free tests advertised all over the place.
Most people who advertise “free hearing exam” are not audiologists. According to Medicare, Medicaid and all other insurance, a hearing instrument specialist is not capable of doing a diagnostic hearing test. They can only do a test to fit a hearing aid. So, chances are, if you see a hearing instrument specialist, you will be pushed to get hearing aids.
As an audiologist, I have a doctorate. According to Medicare, Medicaid and all other insurance, I am qualified to do a diagnostic hearing evaluation. Sometimes, hearing loss can be treated medically. When you see an audiologist, a proper diagnostic evaluation is completed. It is more thorough and accurate. You will have the total picture of what is wrong and what you can do about it. Sometimes hearing aids are not the answer.
Don’t make an expensive mistake.
See an audiologist for a comprehensive evaluation before even considering hearing aids. And no, hearing aids are not more expensive from an audiologist. We want all of our patients to hear the best they can and will give you all the options to have the best hearing possible for your needs.
