Most people with tinnitus (noise in the ears) have hearing loss. Many people first notice tinnitus after attending a rock concert, loud sporting event or shooting. This is because the noise has overloaded the ears. (Just like too much sun leads to a bad sunburn). Other people develop tinnitus after working around loud noise without any hearing protection.
The single best thing you can do to prevent tinnitus is to wear hearing protection when you are exposed to loud noise. It is a good idea to carry a pair of disposable ear plugs in your purse or wallet, just in case.
There are apps available for smart phones that will monitor noise levels. These are helpful, if you aren’t sure how loud a venue is. Once you have an idea of how loud is too loud, it is easier to be aware of when you need hearing protection.
It is also important to remember that everyday sounds may be too loud. You should wear hearing protection when mowing the lawn or using any power tool. Using an MP3 player can also cause tinnitus. You should not use an MP3 player more than 1-2 hours per day and the volume should be set so that you can carry a conversation with the person next to you. You should never use an MP3 player to block out environmental sounds.
If you hunt, there are special devices that allow you to hear and close off when you fire your gun. If you shoot at a range, you should be wearing ear plugs and muffs.
