The American’s With Disability Act became law twenty-five years ago.
A lot of very good things have happened as a result of the law being passed.
Most of us do not consider hearing loss to be a disability, but it is. Provisions have also been made for the hearing impaired. That doesn’t mean that the hearing impaired will have access to handicapped parking, but a hearing impaired person will have access to devices that help them hear better in a variety of environments.
Hotels and motels are required to provide a telephone that can be used by individuals with hearing loss. Rooms should also be equipped with a smoke detector with a flashing light. When checking in, the individual has to request a room with handicapped access.
Assistive devices are available at the movies, live theater, and lecture halls. Some public and private buildings are looped to provide better hearing with some hearing aids. If you are in need of assistance, don’t be afraid to ask.
