Stories like this are more frequent than we think:
“Recently I was visiting my aunt who was hosting a few family members for a birthday party. We were all excited to spend some quality time together. I walked in to greet my aunt, who I haven’t seen in nearly 2 years. She’s the kind of person who enjoys hosting, cooking, and entertaining. It’s what she LIVES for.
We arrived and I waltzed into the kitchen while she was prepping some food and asked: ‘How’s it going?!’ My aunt paused, then looked at me and replied ‘Yeah!’ Her back was facing me and she continued to prepare the day’s menu and wash dishes.
I thought to myself, well that’s not quite the response I was anticipating. I walked closer to her and asked again ‘How are you doing!?’ To which she then locked eyes with me, saw my lips, and replied, ‘Ohhhhh, I’m doing fine!’
The rest of the day I noticed my aunt was present but not fully PRESENT. I could tell she was straining to follow the conversation and keep up with what people were saying. Her great nieces and nephews were asking questions to which she replied with a generic ‘Mmhmm’ and ‘isn’t that sweet’.
I noticed she would often retreat to the kitchen to ‘just clean up a bit,’ instead of sitting with her relatives she hadn’t seen in years.”
Hearing these types of stories in our clinic is what makes me want MORE for my patients. Our goal is to facilitate better hearing that opens doors for opportunities to experience a life FULL of sound, conversation, and memories.
