Dog Chewed the Hearing Aids

February 13, 2017 by Kathy

Recently there was a story in the news about a man from Orlando who called 911 because his dog ate his hearing aids.

There are proactive things that you can do to prevent your dog (or cat) from eating your hearing aids.

1. Put the hearing aids in their box when not in use.

2. Put the box in a safe place.

3. Put your hearing aids in first thing in the morning and leave them in until you get ready for bed.

4. A table or dresser may not be enough. If you have a big dog, the dog can reach them. I have heard of small dogs climbing on furniture to eat hearing aids. The best place is always a closed drawer.

5. Don’t leave hearing aids where small children can reach them.

6. Be mindful of your hearing aid battery packages. Both small children and pets may eat them. The zinc air batteries we use today are much less toxic than the mercury batteries. You still don’t want the emergency room bills or vet bills from having to have the batteries removed surgically.

Remember, if you establish good habits, your dog, cat, or child will never get the opportunity to eat your hearing aids.
