Does COVID-19 cause hearing loss or tinnitus (noises in the ears)?
As a Doctor of Audiology I make time to stay up to date on new and emerging data regarding COVID-19 and its effects on the auditory system.
At the present moment, there is no formal data that suggests contracting COVID-19 leads to hearing loss or tinnitus. However, I have seen how tinnitus can be exacerbated by factors such as stress, lack of sleep, and unhealthy diet- all of which occurred during the pandemic.
Did you know heavy alcohol consumption or large quantities of caffeine are also thought to negatively impact tinnitus?
It’s not surprising that I’ve seen many patients reporting tinnitus over the past year.
It’s been a time filled with stress and uncertainty for many!
