Security Systems vs Hearing Aids
What does a Security System have in common with Hearing Aids? Nothing! I have been searching for a new security company for my office and recently met with the sales representative from one firm. He was a very nice guy and really knew what he was talking about. During our conversation he mentioned that he had sold hearing aids for about a year. He told me that a friend of his invited him to come into a local franchise and sell hearing aids. He was told that the money was good. After a short … [Read more...]
Great Client Testimonial
It's always wonderful when a patient sends me a great Testimonial - here's one from Karen: "My hearing loss started as a small child and progressively worsened as I aged. About thirty years ago, I was fitted with an in the ear hearing aid. That experience lasted approximately one month. It was awful!! The sound of the dishwasher, silverware, paper, etc. just about drove me to distraction. 'Oh, it is just an adjustment period, you'll get used to it.' That was what was being said. Then the … [Read more...]
Locked Hearing Aids
Did you know that when you get hearing aids at Costco, Sam’s Club and from some providers, like Audigy, the hearing aids are locked? What this means is that the software in the hearing aid is locked, so that you cannot just take your hearing aids wherever you would like for service. This may never be a problem, or it could turn into a huge problem. If you are like many of my patients who live somewhere else in the summer, you may not be able to get your hearing aids serviced if you have a … [Read more...]
Keep Your Hearing Aids Safe
Getting hearing aids for the first time is a big change for most people. You can hear much better in most situations. It also takes a little time just to get used to the routine of having and wearing hearing aids. For most people, it takes about three weeks for something to become a habit. So, you have to think about them in the beginning, probably more than you would like to. That’s okay. Every day gets easier. Getting into a good routine is very helpful for everyone. When the hearing … [Read more...]
Is a Free Hearing Test Really Free?
Today, one of my patients asked me “Why do we charge for a hearing test?” I know it is confusing when you see all these free tests advertised all over the place. Most people who advertise “free hearing exam” are not audiologists. According to Medicare, Medicaid and all other insurance, a hearing instrument specialist is not capable of doing a diagnostic hearing test. They can only do a test to fit a hearing aid. So, chances are, if you see a hearing instrument specialist, you will be pushed … [Read more...]

If It Looks Too Good To Be True
Every once in awhile one of my patients will bring in an ad for hearing aids that they have seen in the paper or received in the mail. They almost always talk about how cheap they are. Or if you buy two you get the second one for free, or get $1,500.00 off your purchase. I recently saw an ad that said that if you purchased hearing aids, you would get a free 40" television. Amazing. Don't you wonder how much they are marking up their hearing aids in order to make these fabulous offers? I … [Read more...]
