Buyer Beware: Hearing Aid Warranties Not Honored
It is easy to go online today and order hearing aids. The prices look great, but programming and service are not included in the price of the hearing aids. Most hearing aid manufacturers do not want their products sold online. Hearing aids work best and provide the most benefit when they are fit by an audiologist. To combat this practice, the manufacturers are voiding warranties on hearing aids purchased online. So, your bargain hearing aid is no great deal. Hearing aid repairs … [Read more...]
Hearing Aid Confusion
We are bombarded daily with newspaper ads, television ads, and even radio ads, about hearing aids. It is very confusing. How do you know what to believe? If the ads look too good to be true, they are. Reputable audiologists don’t generally talk about discounts and free stuff ( like televisions), when you purchase hearing aids. These are gimmicks to get you in the door, just like that obnoxious car salesman on TV uses. The key to success with hearing aids is an ongoing … [Read more...]
My Hearing Aids Got Wet – Help!
At least once a week one of my patients comes in and tells me that they got in the shower with their hearing aids on. It isn’t the problem that it used to be. Most hearing aids are nano coated to prevent moisture damage. So, if you accidentally get into the shower with your hearing aids on, don’t panic. Hop right back out, and there shouldn’t be any damage. Wipe off the hearing aid. Open the battery door and throw out the battery. Let the hearing aid dry out and insert a new … [Read more...]

Dog Chewed the Hearing Aids
Recently there was a story in the news about a man from Orlando who called 911 because his dog ate his hearing aids. While this was an emergency to the man, it wasn’t a true emergency. So, if this happens to you, don’t call 911. There are proactive things that you can do to prevent your dog (or cat) from eating your hearing aids. 1. Put the hearing aids in their box when not in use. 2. Put the box in a safe place. 3. Put your hearing aids in first thing in the morning and leave … [Read more...]
Ongoing Care is Key to Success with Hearing Aids
"Several of my patients have asked me about over the counter hearing aids. Because they are less expensive, many people think that a hearing aid is the answer and all you have to do is put it on. This couldn't be farther from the truth. Hearing aids must be programmed correctly and even the most sophisticated person has to learn how to use hearing aids properly. Ongoing care is the key to success with hearing aids. The attached letter from the Wall Street Journal helps to explain this." … [Read more...]

Rechargeable Batteries
There has been a lot in the news recently about rechargeable batteries for hearing aids. At some point, I am sure that they will be great, but we aren’t there yet. There have been rechargeable hearing aids around since I got out of school 35 years ago. None of them were really a good option unless the individual had vision or dexterity problems. Today, there is a new system available and I have looked at it and I don’t think it is quite what we want yet. Today’s regular hearing aid … [Read more...]
Audiologists or Hearing Aid Stores
Are Audiologists More Expensive than Hearing Aid Stores? I recently had a long term patient of mine confess that he had been “shopping” for new hearing aids. He thought it would be less expensive to see a Hearing Instrument Specialist, or hearing aid dealer than it would be to see me. When he returned to me with whistling poorly fit hearing aids from Sam’s Club, he told me his story. He had been to three different hearing aid providers, independent, chain and big box. They all told … [Read more...]
