How would you know if you developed noise induced hearing loss (NIHL)?? Clinically we see that patients with NIHL will notice: → Tinnitus: ringing or noises in the ears → Speech is muffled or unclear: inhibiting their ability to follow conversation and hear in challenging listening environments. Sometimes exposure to impulse or continuous loud noise can result in a temporary hearing loss that disappears after a few days. Recent studies suggest, however, that although the loss of … [Read more...]
What can cause damage to the Inner Ear?
Per the CDC, the following information illustrates how long you need to be exposed to common sounds, on average, before they will cause damage to your inner ear. ❗ Gas-powered lawn mowers and leaf blowers are about 80-85 decibels and damage to your hearing can be caused after 2 hours of constant exposure. ❗ Motorcycles are about 95 decibels and damage to your hearing can be caused after about 50 minutes of exposure. ❗ Sporting events such as hockey playoffs or football games can reach … [Read more...]

Meaningful New Research
Every once in a while I will come across new research that makes me *extra* proud of the work we do at Broadwater Hearing Care. According to Harvard Women’s Health Watch, “Dozens of studies have shown that people who have satisfying relationships with family, friends and their community are happier, have fewer health problems, and live longer.” ???? These types of social connections are made possible through hearing. If we struggle to communicate we also withdraw. ???? As humans we are … [Read more...]

Hearing Aids are more than a Microphone
Believe it or not I still have a lot of patients who think that hearing aids are just a simple device with a microphone and a speaker. Amplifying everything around us. At Broadwater Hearing Care we only fit quality devices that we know will stand the test of time: ✅ They have advanced computer chips that are used to … [Read more...]
Worrying about a Family Member’s Hearing
“I used to worry about my dad. I live out of state and when I called him weekly, it was like he was aloof and not himself. Hearing aids have literally brought him back to life. I used to worry he wasn’t following me on the phone or participating at family gatherings because of memory issues or something. But surely enough, once he could hear well, it was a game changer. He was smiling, laughing, and engaging in conversation just like he used to.” ???? Hearing stories like these is what makes … [Read more...]
Act to Expand Medicare for Hearing Aids
This is an important Act presented by US Representative Lloyd Doggett (D-TX), Chair of the House Ways & Means Health Subcommittee to Expand Medicare to include Hearing Aids and Exams. According to an article in The Hearing Review, there is mounting evidence that indicates the importance of dental, vision, and hearing health to overall health, as outlined in findings in a 2018 Commonwealth Fund Report. Hearing – Among all Medicare beneficiaries, 75% who needed a hearing aid did not have … [Read more...]
Executive Order re Over-the-Counter Hearing Aids
President Biden recently signed an executive order for over-the-counter hearing aids. While I commend President Biden’s efforts, they are short-sighted. Over-the-counter hearing aids have been available for some time. The FDA was mandated to establish a regulatory category for this type of hearing aids in 2017. The FDA regulates hearing devices, as they can adversely affect hearing if fit incorrectly. The prices of hearing aids quoted was ridiculous. Hearing aids are available in all price … [Read more...]
