They are one more option for individuals with mild-to-moderate hearing loss. However, you should be aware that the key to success for most people is the audiologist that they work with.
Unfortunately, insurance rarely covers the services provided by your audiologist.
If you chose to go the over-the-counter route, it is still important to have a hearing evaluation conducted by an audiologist. Hearing evaluations are generally covered by your health insurance. This is necessary to rule out hearing difficulties that may require medical attention and is an important first step, just like an eye exam is an important first step before getting glasses. Your audiologist will rule out other problems that may be causing your hearing loss. It is possible that a medical condition could be causing the hearing difficulty. You may not need hearing aids at all. It is also important to remember that most people underestimate their degree of hearing loss. Because change happens gradually, you may not be aware of how much you are missing. Over-the-counter hearing aids may not be strong enough to help you.
Audiologists have hearing aids available at all price points. Your over-the-counter hearing aids probably do not help you as much as a traditional pair of hearing aids with ongoing care. Hearing aids can be re-programmed to better meet your needs, as your hearing changes over time. Your audiologist will help you adapt to your new hearing aids and show you how to use and take care of them. This is the key to success with hearing aids. Most people are not tech-savy enough to use the hearing aids properly without help.
Hopefully, insurance will cover on-going hearing aid care some day. Regardless, we are here to help you.
